Startup Stormur is a seven-week accelerator for green projects in North Iceland, where participants get the opportunity to strengthen themselves and their businesses and grow with the wind at their backs.

Startup Stormur is built on the model of business accelerators and is tailor-made with the needs of the teams involved in mind, thereby influencing the education available to them. 

With the wind in your back

Startup Stormur is aimed at entrepreneurs, new companies and innovation projects within established companies in North Iceland that have come from the concept stage.

The teams meet experienced mentors, entrepreneurs, investors and business managers at consultancy meetings, attend workshops and educational meetings and form strong networks with each other. 

Startup Stormur mostly takes place online, but the teams also meet three times during the accelerator in workshops at selected locations in North Iceland.

  • Ísponica - Cultivation of vegetables and herbs by aquaponics (drainage of aquaculture) vertical farming. The goal is to grow food indoors, all year round with an emphasis on sustainable production.

    Grinder - Grinder Coffee roasting in Skagafjörður, freshly roasted and fresher coffee

    Cultivate a microfarm - Reduce the carbon footprint and reduce imports and food waste. Grow Microfarm is an environmentally friendly production of green springs, gourmet mushrooms and hempflowers.

    Sigló Sea - Sjálfbær sjóþangrækt/uppskera og kræklingarækt og samfélagstengd ferðaþjónustuþróun.

    Yarrow - An old-fashioned Icelandic medicinal herb gets a new role as a flavoring agent in food production

  • GOLDEN ROOT High-quality products that are grown in a sustainable way, have a positive impact on mental well-being and are energizing
    AMC LEATHER A huge amount of skin is produced as a by-product from the fishing industry, at the same time landfills are filled with durable textiles. By producing leather from skin in larger units, these problems can be solved
    PELLISCOL - PellisCol plans to develop natural Spa skin care products with Icelandic collagen, bringing the collagen closer to the skin with an emphasis on relaxing and rejuvenating
    Skarfakál ArcicCircle - Skarfakál AcrticCircle will strengthen and increase employment opportunities in Grímsey, utilize the resource, promote innovation and increase the production of new raw materials in food production in Iceland
    LOGN - Land Cleanup and Utilization
    SNOÐBREIÐA - Snoðbreiða is an environmentally friendly solution made from wool for use in the cultivation of vegetables, flowers and other vegetation
    EARTH TRACKER - Earth Tracker answers the need for accurate climate impact study by developing high resolution models online tools and personalized adaptation strategies
    SANCTUARY - Sanctuary produces high-quality skin care products without all the harmful substances from beef tallow and Icelandic herbs
    GRÆNAFL - Grænafl ehf. combating the climate crisis by working on electrifying coastal fishing boats and promoting energy transition

  • Icelandic Eider – Árni Rúnar Örvarsson: Icelandic Eider processes eider down at Hraun in Fljótum. They offer eider duvets and their uniqueness is the production of small goods and the development of outdoor products.

    Mýsilica - Sigþóra Brynja Kristjánsdóttir: Mýsilica will produce high quality skin care products prepared in Mývatnssveit, from geothermal brine at Bjarnarflag. The active substance in the skin care products is natural silicone, along with other minerals found in the geothermal brine.

    Icelandic Kelp – Snæbjörn Sigurðarsson / Hafþór Jónsson: Íslandsþari (Icelandic Kelp) intends to use geothermal energy to extract valuable products from large intensity that grows in large quantities in the Nordic region. The project is based on sustainability, full utilisation and full processing of the raw material in harmony with nature. The development of land processing in Húsavík will create about 80 new and diverse jobs.

    East ofVatna – Inga Dóra Þórarinsdóttir / Eduardo Montoya: Austan Vatna has been developing the production of Chimichurri steak sauce and chorizo grill sausages as an Argentine tradition and they intend to use local products for production.

    PlastGardar – Garðar Finnsson: Hey!Roll is going to create a circular economy of agricultural plastics within Iceland where reusable hay bags will last up to 15 years and will then be fully recycled into new bags.

    Myskopun – Juliet Katrín Björke: Mývatns spirulina is about Icelandic the production of dietary supplements. Experimental cultivation of the small algae spirulina is in full swing to the development and best production of spirulina powder as a dietary supplement, and the project is one link to the direct utilisation of geothermal energy for food production.

    Nægtarbrunnur Náttúrunnar– Þórólfur Sigurðsson / Sveinn Garðarsson: Nægtarbrunnur náttúrunnar aims to develop and start producing new drinking products in Bárðardalur, Suður-Þingeyjarsýsla. Prototypes of beverages from local raw materials will be developed for the production of grass ale and rhubarb-based wine.

    Ektafiskur - Real fish. – Elvar Reykjalín: An authentic fish salted fish producer produces salt stones for livestock from a desalination source full of nutrients from the fish.
